Chutes and ladders

On my Christmas Day hike at Oak Point I climbed over a seriously cool hollow log on the Willow Springs Trail, another fitness hurdle for persons of a certain age. The log had a diagonal saw cut that stuck in my imagination. Memories of Pinewood Derby racetracks and skateboard halfpipes tumbled along with something more recent...

Oh, yes! Rocks rolling and acorn counting... that inspiring session at the National Association for the Education of Young Children with Mary E. Hobbs and "Dr. Bob" aka Robert A. Williams about introducing the BIG IDEAS of science with rocks.

The Christmas Turtle brought me a special gift today. The genial parks support forestry crew brought the fabulous hollow log from Oak Point to the Nature Explore Classroom. Winch cables, chain saws, big trucks, and decisions by urban forestry and park natural resources were involved. To me it all seemed like the perfect toy wrapped with a giant gift bow.

Kids are going to love rolling acorns and rocks around in this rock and roll log! They are lucky our city departments cooperate so well and quickly to turn a wild idea into a nature play reality.

Wow. That is the kind of 'toy' all kids need.
